We're Anna and Tetiana, a mother and daughter who host fourteen homes on Galveston Island. So read this the way you'd read a review from a shop owner comparing his street to two others: we have an interest, and we're saying so in the first paragraph rather than the last.
Here is the part that interest doesn't change. The water really is clearer in Port Aransas, and clearer still on South Padre. If your whole trip is about seeing your feet in the Gulf, we are not your island, and we'd rather tell you that now than read it in a review later. What we can do is lay the three towns side by side on the things people actually decide on - how long the drive is, what the water looks like, what beach access costs, what there is to do when it rains for two days - and be straight about which trips belong where.
How far is each Texas beach town from Houston, Austin, and Dallas?
This is the single biggest difference between the three, and it decides more trips than water colour does. Galveston is a day trip from Houston. South Padre is a commitment - it sits at the very bottom of Texas, closer to Mexico than to San Antonio. Port Aransas lands in the middle, and is the one town where the route matters as much as the mileage.

South Padre's own visitor bureau publishes 367 miles from Houston and 565 from Dallas for a slightly different route - close enough that either figure tells the same story.

Two things that table hides. First, Galveston's hour from Houston is genuinely an hour - I-45 ends at the causeway, there is no ferry, no last-leg two-lane road. We broke the Houston drive down street by street in how far Galveston is from Houston. Second, Port Aransas has two front doors. Coming from Houston, Austin or San Antonio, the short way is through Aransas Pass and onto the free TxDOT ferry - it runs 24 hours a day, costs nothing, and the crossing itself takes under ten minutes. The queue is the catch: the town's own guidance is that waits can pass an hour on summer weekends, spring break and Sunday afternoons. The alternative is to drive around through Corpus Christi and over the JFK Causeway on Highway 361, which adds roughly fifty miles and no waiting.
Which Texas beach has the clearest water?
South Padre, then Port Aransas, then us. That order doesn't change with the season and it isn't a matter of one beach being cleaner than another - it's a matter of what is upstream.
Galveston sits at the receiving end of a conveyor belt of river mud. As Visit Galveston's own explainer on the island's water colour puts it, a prevailing east-to-west current carries sediment from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya along the coast, and the Sabine, Trinity, Brazos and Colorado add their own. Shallow water and wind keep it stirred. Go three hundred miles south and those rivers are simply no longer upstream of you, which is why South Padre's visitor bureau can advertise clear emerald water without exaggerating.
What brown water is not is dirty water. Every beach in all three towns is sampled for bacteria by the same state programme - Texas Beach Watch, run by the General Land Office, which monitors around 167 stations across the coast weekly in season and posts advisories when Enterococcus levels exceed EPA limits. The same map covers Galveston, Nueces and Cameron counties, so you can check any of the three before you book rather than taking a rental company's word for it. What is each town actually like?
Galveston: a city that happens to have 32 miles of beach
This is the difference people underestimate. Galveston is a real city of roughly fifty thousand people with a Victorian downtown, a cruise port, restaurants open in February and 32 miles of sandy shoreline attached to it. You can have a beach week here and never plan a beach day, which is exactly why it works for multi-generational groups where not everyone wants sand. It is also the busiest of the three: summer Seawall traffic is real, and so is the first weekend of November, when the Lone Star Rally fills the island.
Port Aransas: a fishing town with cars on the sand
Port A is small - under three thousand permanent residents - and the whole town is built around water you get into rather than look at. Eighteen miles of shoreline are open to street-legal vehicles, so the local habit is to drive onto the sand, park facing the Gulf and set up for the day. Mustang Island State Park adds five more miles of protected coastline just down Highway 361, with primitive camping on the beach itself. Offshore and bay fishing is the town's actual industry, not a tourist add-on. The trade is that the town is quiet after dinner, and that the ferry sets the rhythm of your weekend.
South Padre Island: the clearest water and the longest drive
South Padre is a 34-mile barrier island reached by the Queen Isabella Causeway, with the Laguna Madre on one side and open Gulf on the other. The town itself is small - about two thousand residents - and condo-heavy rather than house-heavy, so a big group often means two or three units rather than one roof. It is the warmest of the three in winter by a wide margin, which is why it fills with Winter Texans from November through March, and the most college-heavy in March, when spring break takes over the island. If you're picturing a quiet family week, avoid the middle two weeks of March entirely.
How much does beach access cost in each town?
All three coasts are public under Texas law - what you pay for is parking, and the three towns charge it very differently. These were the published rates when we checked in September 2026; check your own dates, because at least one of them is changing.

What is there to do when it rains?
This is the question that decides a week in October or February, and it is the one where the gap between the three towns is widest. A rained-out afternoon is survivable anywhere. Two rained-out days is not the same thing in a city of fifty thousand as it is in a fishing town of three thousand.

When is Galveston the wrong choice?
Four situations where we'd tell you to book elsewhere, and we mean it:
- You've promised someone clear turquoise water. Ours is brown to green most of the year and the reason is geography, not maintenance. A guest who arrives expecting the Caribbean writes a one-star review about accuracy, and they're not wrong to.
- Your trip is mid-May to July and the beach is the entire plan. That's seaweed season here. It gets cleaned, but it comes back, and we'd rather you knew the odds before you paid.
- You want to drive onto the sand and park your truck in front of your chairs. That's ordinary in Port Aransas. Here it's restricted to specific stretches, and the family beaches aren't among them.
- You're coming from San Antonio or the Valley. Port Aransas is closer to San Antonio than we are, and South Padre is far closer to the Rio Grande Valley. Driving past a good beach to reach ours makes no sense.
The flip side is worth saying just as plainly. If the drive matters, if the group is large, if somebody in the party wants a museum and a proper dinner rather than sand, or if you're sailing out of the port - Galveston wins those, and it isn't close.
Is it cheaper to stay in Galveston, Port Aransas or South Padre?
We're not going to quote you an average nightly rate for three towns, because nobody publishes a figure honest enough to repeat - rates move with the week, the holiday and the dune line. What we can tell you is the shape of each market, which matters more than an average anyway. Galveston and Port Aransas are house markets: whole stilt houses that sleep ten to seventeen, where the per-person cost falls as the group grows. South Padre skews to condo towers, which is excellent for two people and awkward for fourteen. And in all three towns, a booking site adds its guest service fee on top of whatever the owner charges - booking direct with the owner skips it, which is worth up to 15% on our own homes. One seasonal note in our favour: autumn. The Gulf here stays warm well past Labor Day while the crowds and the rates drop - the case for September through November is in Galveston in the fall.
