We're Anna and Tetiana, a mother and daughter who host fourteen homes here, and if you asked us to pick one stretch of the calendar to send a first-time visitor, it would be Galveston in the fall. Not because the weather is better than June - it isn't, it's just gentler - but because everything else is better. The beach parks empty out, the water usually clears up, the festivals stack up on consecutive weekends, and the same house costs less than it did in July. The catch is that a few things close, and one weekend in November is the busiest of the entire year. Both are below.
Is autumn a good time to visit Galveston?
Yes, with one honest caveat about which month you pick. The three months are genuinely different trips. September is summer with the schools back: hot, humid, swimmable, and quiet Monday to Thursday. October is the month locals guard - warm days, cool evenings, water still comfortable, and the highest odds of green water all year. November is a coat-in-the-evening month: lovely for walking, beachcombing and eating, mostly finished for swimming.
The other thing that changes is the island's rhythm. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day the Seawall runs at full volume. From mid-September the weekday version of Galveston appears - the one where you park outside the restaurant you wanted, and the beach in front of the house is yours.

Can you still swim in Galveston in the fall?
In September and October, easily. The Gulf here holds its heat long after the air starts dropping - 85°F water in September is bath-warm, and 78°F in October is what most of the US coast calls summer. November is the turn: a 69°F monthly average means comfortable for a quick dip on a warm early-November afternoon and bracing by Thanksgiving.
There is a bonus that nobody advertises. Autumn is when the water here looks its best. The spring runoff and the heaviest tropical rain are behind us, and the coastal current flips to push saltier offshore water toward the beach, so September and October give the highest odds of green to blue-green Gulf. Two notes on that list. Island Oktoberfest is a church festival with free admission and a genuine German kitchen, and it is the single event we recommend most often to guests who want the island rather than the tourist version of it. What closes in Galveston after Labor Day?
This is the part most fall guides leave out, and it is the one that generates disappointed messages. Here is what actually changes.

In short: if the waterpark is the reason for the trip, autumn is the wrong season and we would rather you knew now. If the beach, the food, the history and the quiet are the reason, everything you need is open.
Is hurricane season over by October?
Not until November 30. The Atlantic season officially runs June 1 through November 30, and September is its climatological peak, so a September or October booking carries real - if modest - storm risk. What that risk looks like in a given year is knowable, though. In its August 6 update NOAA held its below-normal outlook for the 2026 season: 7-13 named storms, of which 2-6 could become hurricanes, including 0-2 major ones, and a 75 percent chance of below-normal activity overall, with a strengthening El Niño suppressing development. As of that update the season had produced two named storms, Arthur and Bertha, and no hurricanes.
A seasonal outlook is not a landfall forecast, and one storm on your week matters more than the annual total. What we tell guests is practical rather than reassuring: watch the National Hurricane Center rather than social media, know your cancellation terms before you pay, and read our Galveston hurricane season guide, which covers evacuation orders and what actually happens to a booking when one is issued.
Are Galveston beach house rates lower in the fall?
Yes. Autumn is our low season, and nightly rates come off the summer peak across the island - most steeply from mid-September, when the family market disappears overnight. Booking straight through us takes off up to another 15 percent compared with the big booking sites, because there is no guest service fee added at checkout. Two exceptions, so you can plan around them. Lone Star Rally weekend, November 5-8, is the most expensive weekend of the year on this island and it sells out months ahead. Thanksgiving week is the second. Everything between them is the cheapest good weather Galveston sells.

It is the best stretch of the year, and it comes with a rule you must know. Cooling water pushes redfish and speckled trout into the bays and along the beachfront, and the Texas licence year runs from September 1 to August 31, so an autumn trip needs a fresh licence. Flounder is the exception: Texas Parks and Wildlife closes the flounder fishery from November 1 through December 14, with a bag limit of zero by any method during those dates. Outside the closure it is a five-fish daily bag with a 15-inch minimum.
If fishing is the point of the trip, a canal-front home matters more than a beachfront one - you can fish off the bulkhead at first light without loading the car.
Guests who come in October almost always come back in October. It is the one season where nothing about the island is compromised - not the water, not the weather, not the parking, not the price. We just have to persuade people that a beach trip after Labor Day is allowed.

When autumn in Galveston is the wrong call
- The waterpark is the trip. Schlitterbahn shut for the 2026 season on September 7. There is no autumn workaround, and a home with a pool is not the same thing to a nine-year-old.
- You want guaranteed swimming in late November. The Gulf averages 69°F for the month and it is falling the whole time. Book September or October for water, November for walking.
- You want rally weekend on the cheap. November 5-8 is the busiest and most expensive weekend of the year here. If you want quiet or value that weekend, pick a different one.
- You need zero storm risk. The season runs to November 30. The odds in 2026 are low and NOAA says so, but low is not none, and no host can promise otherwise.
- You want the Seawall at full volume. Midweek in October the island is calm, some kitchens close early, and that is the whole appeal to us. If you were hoping for a crowd, come in July.
