We're Anna and Tetiana, a mother and daughter who host fourteen homes on the island, and families ask us the Moody Gardens vs Pleasure Pier vs Schlitterbahn question before almost every summer trip. The honest answer depends on two things: the month you are coming and how tall your youngest is. Every price and date below comes from the attraction's own website as read on October 24, 2026. They change by season and by week, so confirm them for your dates before you buy.
How much do Moody Gardens, Pleasure Pier and Schlitterbahn cost?
The table puts the three side by side. Visit lengths are our own estimate from hosting families; everything else is what each park publishes.

Is Moody Gardens worth it?
For most families, yes, and it is the one we recommend first. The Aquarium Pyramid and the Rainforest Pyramid are indoors, open every day on the current weekly hours sheet, and keep a toddler and a grandparent equally happy. Food and drinks are not allowed inside the pyramids, so plan lunch between them.
Whether the Value Pass pays off depends on how much you will see. Adults pay $45 for the Aquarium alone and $60 online for Aquarium plus Rainforest, so the $75 Value Pass makes sense once you add a 3D or 4D film and the 20,000 Leagues adventure. A family of two adults and three kids can buy the Family Value Pass for $230, sold onsite only.
Two things worth knowing this autumn. The Discovery Museum is closed until the Galveston Children's Museum opens inside it in November 2026, and Palm Beach, the outdoor wave pool and lazy river, runs only in summer according to the attractions page. From November 21 the gardens switch to Holiday in the Gardens; our November and December guide covers that ticket.
Is the Pleasure Pier worth it for little kids?
It depends on height more than age. Of the 16 rides, the headline ones (Iron Shark, Texas Star Flyer, Sea Dragon, Revolution, Cyclone) need 48 inches. Under 42 inches, a child is down to Frog Hopper and Texas Tea at 36 inches, Pier Pileup's kid section from 38 inches, and Lil' Captain Wheel, Carousel, Galaxy Wheel and Big Wheelin' with an adult.
Our honest read: for a preschooler, the $24.99 under-48 wristband is a lot for a few gentle rides. Single ride tickets start at $6 but also require a walk-on pass. For a ten-year-old who wants a roller coaster over the Gulf, the wristband at sunset is one of the best evenings on the island.
Practical rules from the pier's own FAQ: no outside food, coolers or bottled water; strollers are allowed but must stay out of ride lines; wristbands allow re-entry; rides close for lightning and high wind. In the off-season it is often dark on weekdays, so check the calendar before you drive over.
Is Schlitterbahn Galveston open, and is it still Schlitterbahn?
It is closed now and reopens for summer 2027. Six Flags agreed in March 2026 to sell the park to EPR Properties, with Enchanted Parks as operator, and the park's site now says it is under new management while keeping the Schlitterbahn name. The 2027 opening date and daily ticket prices are not posted yet; we will update this page when they are.
If your trip is between late May and August and your kids love water, it is a strong full-day choice. Per the park FAQ, life jackets are free, and picnic baskets and coolers are allowed as long as there is no glass and no alcohol, which cuts the cost of a day noticeably.
Our home: Dorado GrandeWhich one should we pick for our trip?
- Visiting from September to April, or with a baby: Moody Gardens. It opens daily while the other two are closed or weekend-only, and ages 3 and under go free.
- Kids 48 inches and up, summer or a fall weekend: Pleasure Pier at sunset, Moody Gardens the next morning.
- June to August with confident swimmers: Schlitterbahn for one full day, then a beach day to recover.
- Mixed ages and a tight budget: one Moody Gardens Value Pass day, the free beach, and the pier on a walk-on pass just to stroll.
For a longer list that includes the free stuff, see things to do in Galveston with kids, and if the weather turns, our rainy-day guide. To fit an attraction into a short stay, the perfect weekend itinerary shows how we would pace it.
Our rule for families: one paid attraction a day, never two. The kids remember the pier at sunset and the penguins, and then they remember the beach, which is free.

When are we not the right fit for this kind of trip?
- You want to walk to the Pleasure Pier. None of our homes is on that stretch of the Seawall; you will drive to all three attractions.
- You want a hotel-and-tickets package. Moody Gardens has its own hotel next to the pyramids, and that is the simpler choice for a one-night stop.
- You are coming for Schlitterbahn in winter. It is closed, and no home of ours changes that.
- You need everything confirmed in writing for one exact date. We can tell you what the parks publish, but only the parks set their hours.
When you do book a house, booking straight with us skips the Airbnb guest service fee, up to 15% less than the big booking sites. The math is in our book-direct guide.
