Things to Do in Galveston When It Rains

Anna & TetianaOctober 23, 20269 min read

We're Anna and Tetiana, a mother and daughter who host fourteen homes on the island, and a wet day is the one thing every guest asks us about in advance. The good news is that Galveston has more to do indoors than most beach towns, and almost all of it is within a short drive of the Seawall. Prices and hours below come from each attraction's own page as read in October 2026; they change, so confirm them for your dates before you drive over.

How often does it actually rain in Galveston?

Often enough to plan for, rarely enough to ruin a week. The National Weather Service 1991-2020 normals for Galveston put November at 4.28 inches and December at 4.23 inches, and the running total through November 30 is 42.99 inches, which makes a normal year about 47 inches. Most of it falls in short, heavy bursts, and a Gulf shower often clears by afternoon.

Two things are worth separating. A rain day is a day to be indoors for a few hours. Lightning is a reason to leave the sand at once, and a tropical system is a different situation altogether, covered in our guide to visiting Galveston during a tropical storm.

What are the best indoor things to do in Galveston when it rains?

Six stops hold up for a full wet day. The table shows what is inside, what each one publishes for admission and hours, and how long to allow. Time estimates are ours except where a venue states one.

Honest caveats from the venues' own pages. The Railroad Museum is spread over outdoor railcars as well as the depot, so it is a light-rain stop, not a downpour stop. The Seaport page lists several closure dates and notes that boarding Elissa takes about eight steps or a ramp, so call 409-763-1877 before you go. The Bishop's Palace says it has no wheelchair ramp. The Ocean Star rig is closed Monday and Tuesday, which is the day people usually need it most.

How should I stack them into one wet day?

Pick one anchor and one short stop. Moody Gardens alone fills most of a day and the whole thing is under cover, so it is the easy choice for kids. For adults, the Strand end of the island works better: the Seaport and the Bishop's Palace or the Moody Mansion fit in a morning and afternoon, with lunch between. Our Galveston restaurant guide covers where to sit down out of the weather.

What can families do in Galveston on a rainy day?

Moody Gardens is the answer most parents land on, because the aquarium, the rainforest, the Discovery Pyramid exhibits and the theaters keep different ages busy under one roof. The Ocean Star rig suits older kids who like machinery, and the Railroad Museum suits any age that likes trains, if the rain is light. For a longer list of what works for children in any weather, see things to do in Galveston with kids.

Plan one slow hour at the house too. A rainy afternoon with cards, a movie and a pot of something on the stove is part of a beach week, and it is easier with a full kitchen and a living room that fits everyone. Check the listing of the specific home for what it provides, because ours differ.

A grey day from the porch. The weather changes the plan for a few hours, not the week.

Is it safe to be on the beach when it rains?

Light rain, yes. Lightning, no. If you can hear thunder, leave the sand and the water and go indoors; the Gulf is flat and open, and you are the tallest thing on it. Rip currents can be stronger after heavy weather, so read the beach flags before you swim again. Our guide to the best Galveston beaches lists where lifeguards and facilities are.

What else is there to do beyond the big attractions?

Plenty of shorter things: walk the shops and galleries on the Strand between showers, sit down for a long lunch, or tour a second museum. Our broader list of the best things to do in Galveston includes several that work in any weather.

We tell guests the same thing every time the forecast turns: pick one anchor stop, book lunch somewhere dry, and let the beach wait until tomorrow. The island is still there when the cloud lifts.

When is Galveston a poor choice for a rainy trip?

  • You need a full week of guaranteed sun. Nobody can promise that on a Gulf island in any month, and neither can we.
  • Your whole group wants to be outside. The indoor list is good, but it is six stops. A week of four wet days runs out of them.
  • You are staying in a house and want everything within a short walk. Our homes sit on the beach side; the museums are a drive away, and a car is needed.
  • Mobility is a concern. The Bishop's Palace has no ramp and Elissa needs a ramp or steps. Call each venue first.
