Galveston in November and December: Holiday Events, Weather, and Quiet Beaches

Anna & TetianaOctober 13, 202612 min read

We're Anna and Tetiana, a mother and daughter who host fourteen homes on the island, and Galveston in November and December is the version of the place we would show a friend who thinks they know it. The Seawall crowds are gone, the Strand turns Victorian for a weekend, a mile of lights goes up along the bay at Moody Gardens, and the beach in front of the house is empty at nine in the morning. The honest trade is the water: by Thanksgiving the Gulf is for walking, beachcombing and fishing, not swimming. Everything below is from the organisers' own pages and the National Weather Service, with the dates and prices as published for 2026 - check each before you build a trip around it.

What is the weather like in Galveston in November and December?

Mild and changeable. The island sits in the Gulf, so it runs a few degrees warmer than Houston at night and rarely freezes, but a cold front can drop the afternoon from the seventies to the fifties in a single day. Air numbers below are the National Weather Service 1991-2020 climate normals for Galveston, published by the Houston/Galveston forecast office for November and December. Water temperatures are hourly averages for 2022-2025 at NOAA station 8771341, the Galveston Bay Entrance North Jetty gauge.

MonthNormal high / lowAvg water tempNormal rainfallCrowdsWhat the month is like
November72.4°F / 58.7°F69°F4.28 inQuiet, except rally weekend (November 5-8) and Thanksgiving weekSweater evenings, warm afternoons early in the month. The daily normal high slides from 77°F on November 1 to 68°F by November 30. Hurricane season officially ends November 30.
December65.5°F / 51.6°F60°F4.23 inQuiet, with a full Strand on Dickens weekend and a bump between Christmas and New YearCoat weather after dark. The normal high is 68°F on December 1 and 63°F on December 31. Fronts bring grey, windy days; between them, bright and still.

The practical version: pack layers, not a parka. A December afternoon on the deck is often shirt-sleeve weather, and the same evening wants a jacket and the fire pit. Fog is the other winter character - it rolls in off the warm Gulf on still mornings and burns off by lunch.

Can you swim in Galveston in November or December?

Hardly anyone does, and we would rather say so. At a 69°F monthly average the first days of November still allow a quick dip on a warm afternoon; by Thanksgiving the water is in the low sixties, and December's 60°F average is cold-plunge territory. What the beach is good for in winter is everything else: long walks with nobody on the sand, the best shelling of the year after a front, surf fishing at first light, and sunsets that come early enough for the kids to see them.

The beach parks stay open. Stewart Beach lists daily hours of 6 AM to 8 PM and $15 per vehicle all year, with chair and umbrella rentals finishing on November 2. The free Seawall access and the West End pocket parks never close. If a home with a pool matters to you, note that outdoor pools on the island are cold in December unless they are heated - check the listing of the specific home, because ours differ.

What holiday events are in Galveston in November and December 2026?

More than most people expect from a beach town, and they stack up on consecutive weekends from Thanksgiving to New Year. Dates and admission below are from the organisers' own pages as published in October 2026. Verify each on your dates before you buy.

Dickens on The Strand: what it actually is

For one weekend the Galveston Historical Foundation closes the Strand and fills it with Victorian London - costumed parades, carolers, bagpipes, handbell choirs and a few thousand people in top hats and bustles. The 2026 festival, the 53rd, runs Friday December 4 to Sunday December 6. Per the tickets page, Friday evening from 5 to 9 PM is free, Saturday runs 10 AM to 9 PM and Sunday noon to 6 PM with paid admission, and arriving in Victorian costume gets half off at the gate. It is the one December weekend when downtown parking is genuinely hard, so stay somewhere with its own parking and walk or ride in.

Holiday in the Gardens: lights, ice and a slide

Moody Gardens runs its holiday season from November 21 through January 2: a mile-long Holiday Lights Trail along the bay with more than two million lights, ICE LAND (this year themed Caribbean Christmas, carved from two million pounds of ice and kept at 9°F - bring the coats they hand you and your own gloves), an outdoor ice rink, the Arctic Slide, and a kiddie train. Per Moody Gardens' own 2026 guide, the Holiday Evening Pass starts at $50, is valid from 4 PM, and bundles the lights, ICE LAND, the two pyramids, the theaters, the slide and skating with skate rental. Parking is free for the holiday event. Go on a weeknight if you can; weekend evenings between Christmas and New Year are the crowded ones.

What is Thanksgiving week like in Galveston?

Full. Thanksgiving is November 26 in 2026, and the week around it is the second-busiest stretch of our autumn after rally weekend - Houston families drive down for a few days, the big beach houses go first, and nightly rates on the island reflect it. It is also one of the best weeks of the year to be here: the weather is usually kind, the tree lighting and Nutcracker Market land on the same weekend, and a house that sleeps sixteen with a full kitchen is a far easier way to feed a family than a restaurant with a two-hour wait.

Two pieces of advice from hosting that week for years. Book early - the houses that sleep twelve or more are the ones that run out. And if you plan to cook, do the big grocery run on the mainland or at the island's larger stores on Tuesday, not Wednesday afternoon. Our guide to big beach houses for a family reunion covers how to split the rooms and the bill.

What is closed in Galveston in the winter?

This is the part that generates disappointed messages, so here it is plainly.

Stewart Beach and East BeachOpen daily, 6 AM-8 PM, $15 per vehicle. Chair and umbrella rentals end November 2
Moody Gardens, the Strand, the museums, the Elissa, restaurantsOpen all year. Expect shorter midweek kitchen hours and some restaurants closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day
The beachNever closes. Free access along the Seawall and at the West End pocket parks

Are Galveston rentals cheaper in November and December?

Mostly, yes. Outside three windows - rally weekend, Thanksgiving week and the stretch from about December 26 to January 1 - late autumn and early winter are the lowest-rate weeks our calendar has, and the same beach house that was contested in July often sits open the week before. The first half of December in particular is the quietest good-weather stretch of the entire year. Booking straight through us takes off up to another 15 percent compared with the big booking sites, because there is no guest service fee added at checkout; the maths is in our book-direct guide, and last-minute Galveston shows what is open in the next few weeks.

Christmas week itself is its own thing. Families book the large houses for a beach Christmas, the island fills between the holidays, and Holiday in the Gardens is at its busiest. If you want the lights without the crowd, come the first or second weekend of December instead.

December on the deck at Grand Beach: a 65°F afternoon, nobody on the sand, and a sunset before dinner. Grand Beach Retreat sleeps 16, which is what Thanksgiving week asks for.
Our December guests are the ones who leave the longest reviews. They come for Dickens or the lights, and what they write about afterwards is the empty beach at nine in the morning with a coffee. We stopped being surprised by it years ago.

When Galveston in November or December is the wrong call

  • You want to swim. The Gulf averages 69°F in November and 60°F in December. Book September or October for water; the island in winter is for walking it.
  • The waterpark or the pier rides are the trip. Schlitterbahn is closed until spring and the Pleasure Pier runs a reduced seasonal calendar. A nine-year-old will notice.
  • You want quiet on rally weekend, Thanksgiving week or Christmas week. Those are the three busy windows of the season. Pick the weeks between them for the island at its calmest and cheapest.
  • You need guaranteed sunshine. Winter fronts bring grey, windy days with highs in the fifties. Between fronts it is lovely, but no host can promise which days you get.
  • You are counting on the Seawall at full volume. In December some kitchens shorten their hours and midweek the island is genuinely sleepy. That is the appeal to us; if it is not to you, come in summer.

Still choosing a season? Our fall guide covers September and October, when the water is still warm, and the best time to visit Galveston sets the whole year side by side. For a holiday-week house that sleeps the entire family, browse our large-group Galveston rentals.

Frequently asked questions

Is Galveston worth visiting in December?+

Yes, if you want a festive, quiet island rather than a swimming trip. National Weather Service 1991-2020 normals give December a 65.5°F average high and a 51.6°F low, the Gulf averages about 60°F at NOAA station 8771341, and the beaches are nearly empty. Dickens on The Strand runs December 4-6, 2026, Holiday in the Gardens at Moody Gardens runs November 21 to January 2, and the Polar Express train ride runs November 13 to December 23. Outside Dickens weekend and Christmas week, rental rates are at the year's low.

How cold is Galveston in November?+

Mild. The National Weather Service normal high for Galveston in November is 72.4°F and the normal low is 58.7°F, with 4.28 inches of rain for the month. The daily normal high falls from 77°F on November 1 to 68°F on November 30, and a cold front can push an afternoon into the fifties for a day or two. Gulf water averages about 69°F for the month, so it is a walking beach rather than a swimming beach by Thanksgiving.

When is Dickens on The Strand 2026?+

Friday December 4 to Sunday December 6, 2026, on the Strand in downtown Galveston, run by the Galveston Historical Foundation. Per the foundation's tickets page, Friday evening (5-9 PM) is free, Saturday runs 10 AM-9 PM and Sunday noon-6 PM with paid admission of $20 for adults and $13 for youth aged 7-12, children 6 and under free, with prices rising by $5 on November 20. Guests in Victorian costume get half off gate admission.

What are the dates for Moody Gardens Holiday in the Gardens 2026?+

November 21, 2026 through January 2, 2027. The season includes the mile-long Holiday Lights Trail with more than two million lights, ICE LAND (themed Caribbean Christmas in 2026, kept at 9°F), an ice rink, the Arctic Slide and a kiddie train. Moody Gardens lists a Holiday Evening Pass from $50, valid from 4 PM, covering the lights, ICE LAND, both pyramids, the theaters, the slide and skating with skate rental, and says parking is free for the holiday event. Check moodygardens.com for your dates.

Can you swim in Galveston in December?+

Realistically, no. The Gulf at Galveston averages about 60°F in December based on 2022-2025 hourly readings at NOAA station 8771341, and the air normal high is 65.5°F. Some people take a quick plunge; most use the beach for walking, shelling after a front, surf fishing and sunsets. The beach parks at Stewart Beach and East Beach remain open daily 6 AM-8 PM at $15 per vehicle, and Seawall access is free.

Is Galveston busy at Thanksgiving?+

Yes. Thanksgiving is November 26 in 2026, and the surrounding week is the second-busiest part of the autumn after Lone Star Rally weekend (November 5-8). Houston families book the large beach houses first, restaurants need reservations, and the city tree lighting at Saengerfest Park (November 28) and Moody Gardens' Nutcracker Market (November 27-28) fall on the same weekend. Book a house that sleeps your whole group early, and if you plan to cook, shop before Wednesday.

What is closed in Galveston in the winter?+

Schlitterbahn Galveston closed for the season on September 7, 2026 and reopens in spring. The Pleasure Pier runs a seasonal calendar with many winter weekdays dark, so check its hours for your dates. Chair and umbrella rentals at the beach parks end November 2, and the Galveston Fishing Pier drops from 24 hours to 7 AM-11 PM after the weekend following Thanksgiving. Moody Gardens, the Strand, the museums, restaurants and the beaches themselves stay open all year.
