We get this message every week: "We sail Sunday morning out of Galveston - is it worth staying on the island the night before, or should we just drive down from Houston?" We're Anna and Tetiana, we host fourteen homes here, and a good share of our guests are cruisers. So here's the version we'd give a friend, with real drive times, real parking numbers, and the cases where we'd honestly tell you to book a hotel instead.
How far is the Galveston cruise port from a beach house?
Closer than most people expect. All of Galveston's cruise terminals cluster together on Harborside Drive on the north (bay) side of the island, and the island is small. Here's the actual driving distance from our homes to the Terminal 25 / 28 area, measured door to door:
Driving distance to the cruise terminals on Harborside Drive. Times are without traffic - add 15-20 minutes on a Saturday or Sunday embarkation morning, when several thousand cars head for the same few blocks.
| Home | Sleeps | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Beach Retreat, Fishwife, Sunrise on the Beach, Sandy Sea-cret, Alma de Mar, Dorado Grande, The Grand View (all Grand Beach / East End) | 12-17 | ~2.9 miles | ~8 minutes |
| Oasis by the Bay (central island) | 10 | ~4.8 miles | ~10 minutes |
| Seascape condos (Seawall) | 4 | ~7.7 miles | ~14 minutes |
| Tiki Retreat (Sea Isle, West End) | 10 | ~21.6 miles | ~38 minutes |
| Top-Floor Condo at Pointe West (far West End) | 8 | ~25.1 miles | ~41 minutes |
That gap matters more than it looks. From the East End you can have a slow breakfast, load the car at ten, and still be in the terminal line early. From the far West End you're doing a 40-minute drive with luggage before your vacation even starts - beautiful homes, wrong choice for a cruise morning.
Which terminal does my cruise line use in Galveston?
Galveston runs four cruise terminals, and each line has a home base. Terminal 16 is the newest, opened in November 2025.
Terminal assignments as of the 2026 season. Ships do move between terminals by season and sailing.
| Terminal | Usually sails | Where it is |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal 10 | Royal Caribbean | Harborside Dr, Pier 10 |
| Terminal 16 | Norwegian, MSC | Harborside Dr, Pier 16 |
| Terminal 25 | Carnival | Harborside Dr, Pier 25 |
| Terminal 28 | Disney, Princess (Carnival overflow) | Harborside Dr, Pier 28 |
Should we drive down the morning of, or come the night before?
Look at what the cruise lines themselves say. Carnival tells guests their flight should arrive no later than four hours before the ship's departure time. Royal Caribbean requires every guest to be fully checked in and onboard no later than 90 minutes before port operations close - for a 5:00 PM departure, that means being at the terminal by 2:30 PM at the latest.
Now add the drive. Houston to Galveston is about an hour on a clean day, but I-45 south and the causeway are exactly where a Friday afternoon or a holiday weekend backs up, and there is no alternate route onto the island. Miss the ship and the cruise line owes you nothing. A night on the island turns a stressful morning into an eight-minute drive.
It also fixes the other end. Ships disembark in the morning, and most people are off the boat by 9 or 10 AM - which is a rough time to start a five-hour drive back to Dallas or Austin with tired kids. Staying a night after the cruise is the underrated half of this plan.
Is a beach house actually cheaper than hotel rooms?
For two people, usually not. For a family or a group, it usually is - because hotels charge by the room and a house charges by the house. A cruising group of eight is two or three hotel rooms; it's one beach house with everyone under one roof.
The pre-cruise math for a group of eight, one night.
| Hotel rooms | One beach house | |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms needed | 2-3 | 1 home |
| Breakfast before sailing | Per person, or a hotel buffet | Full kitchen - eggs and coffee for the whole group |
| Parking the night before | Often extra, per car | Included at the house (Grand Beach Retreat parks up to 6 vehicles) |
| Everyone together | Split across floors | One living room, one table |
| Beach the evening before | Depends on the hotel | Grand Beach homes are on the sand |
The other quiet advantage: a house lets you pack at a table instead of on a hotel bed, and lets the group leave in one convoy instead of coordinating three rooms by text.

Where do we park while we're on the cruise?
At the port. The Port of Galveston runs 13 surface lots, an indoor facility and a multi-level garage - about 5,500 spaces in total - split between covered and uncovered, walk-up and shuttle. The port quotes your exact rate only when you enter your sailing dates, because pricing is dynamic by ship and date.
Ballpark port parking, from published 2026 guides. Treat these as a range, not a quote - book on the port's site for your dates.
| Terminal | 5-day cruise | 7-day cruise |
|---|---|---|
| Terminals 25 & 28, outdoor | ~$119 | ~$157 |
| Terminals 25 & 28, indoor | ~$137 | ~$186 |
| Terminal 10, South Lot | ~$127 | ~$178 |
| Terminal 10, North / Pier 10 / Pier 12 lots | ~$149 | ~$208 |
Rates run roughly $17-$19 a night, plus a booking service fee, the port terminal access fee, a City of Galveston fee and Texas sales tax - so the number at checkout is higher than the nightly rate suggests. Reserve online in advance; embarkation-day walk-ups pay more and park farther out.
When a hotel is the better call
We'd rather send you to the right place than sell you the wrong one. Book a hotel instead if:
- It's just two of you for one night. A room near the port will almost always beat a whole house on price.
- You're flying into Hobby or Bush late at night. A hotel with a shuttle and a 24-hour desk beats a self-check-in house at 1 AM.
- You want a bellhop and a breakfast buffet. That's a hotel product, and there's nothing wrong with wanting it.
- Your dates are one night, mid-summer, on a Saturday. Most beach houses have a minimum stay in peak season - ask us, and if we can't fit you we'll say so.
How to book a pre-cruise stay with us
Check-in is at 4:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM, and early check-in or a late check-out is often possible on request - worth asking, because a late check-out on disembarkation day is exactly what a cruise family needs. Book direct on this site and you skip the Airbnb guest service fee: same home, same dates, up to 15% less. And you'll always reach one of us, not a call center - useful when your ship's terminal changes two days out.
The cruisers who have the calmest morning are the ones who got in the night before, unpacked nothing, and walked on the beach at sunset. Eight minutes to the terminal buys you an entire evening of vacation you'd otherwise spend on I-45.

Frequently asked questions
How far is the Galveston cruise port from the beach houses?+
Galveston's cruise terminals are all on Harborside Drive. From our East End and Grand Beach homes it's about 2.9 miles - roughly an 8-minute drive without traffic. Oasis by the Bay is about 4.8 miles (10 minutes) and the Seawall condos about 7.7 miles (14 minutes). West End homes like Tiki Retreat and the Pointe West condo are 21-25 miles away, a 38-41 minute drive, which is a long haul on embarkation morning.
Should we arrive in Galveston the day before our cruise?+
For most guests, yes. Carnival advises that your flight arrive no later than four hours before departure, and Royal Caribbean requires guests to be checked in and onboard at least 90 minutes before port operations close. Houston to Galveston is about an hour on a good day, but I-45 and the causeway are a single route onto the island - one accident can cost you the ship. Arriving the night before turns embarkation into an eight-minute drive.
Which cruise terminal will my ship use in Galveston?+
As of the 2026 season, Royal Caribbean sails from Terminal 10, Norwegian and MSC from Terminal 16 (opened November 2025), Carnival from Terminal 25, and Disney and Princess from Terminal 28, which also takes Carnival overflow. Ships do move between terminals, so always go by the terminal printed on your boarding pass.
Where do you park during a Galveston cruise, and what does it cost?+
The Port of Galveston runs about 5,500 parking spaces across 13 surface lots, an indoor facility and a garage. Published 2026 guides put a week of outdoor parking near Terminals 25 and 28 around $157 and indoor around $186, with Terminal 10 lots running roughly $178-$208 for seven days. Rates are dynamic and include added fees and Texas sales tax, so reserve online with your sailing dates for an exact price.
Can we leave our car at the rental while we're on the cruise?+
No. The home is turned over to the next guests the same day you check out, so there is no place to leave a vehicle. Reserve port parking in advance, or use an off-port lot with a terminal shuttle.
Can we get a late check-out on the day we sail, or an early check-in when we get back?+
Often, yes - just ask. Standard check-in is 4:00 PM and check-out is 11:00 AM, and we can frequently flex either end when the calendar allows. Cruise guests are exactly the case we try to accommodate, since ships disembark early in the morning.
Is it cheaper to book a pre-cruise stay direct instead of on Airbnb?+
Yes - booking direct on this site skips the Airbnb guest service fee, so the same home on the same dates costs up to 15% less. You also reach us directly, which matters when a sailing time or terminal changes at the last minute.
