Renting a Galveston beach house for a wedding weekend, a shower or a 40th can be the best decision of the trip, if you use the house for what it is good at. We're Anna and Tetiana, a mother and daughter who host fourteen homes on the island, and we get this question several times a month: can we have the ceremony at the house? Can 60 people come over for the reception? The short answer is no, and this guide explains why, and what works instead.
Every rule below was checked in October 2026 against the source that sets it: the Galveston Park Board, the City of Galveston's short-term rental ordinance, Airbnb's own policy, and the Texas Family Code. House rules come from each home's listing.
Can you have a party or event at a Galveston vacation rental?
At ours, no. The listings for our big Grand Beach homes say it in the same words: no events or parties. That covers receptions, ceremonies at the house, rehearsal dinners with outside guests and anything with a DJ. The people on the reservation can of course celebrate together: a birthday cake on the deck, a long dinner, a toast at sunset. The line is outside guests and anything that turns a house into a venue.
It is not only our rule. Since October 1, 2025 the City of Galveston licenses short-term rentals itself, and the ordinance Council updated on November 13, 2025 makes owners responsible for guests following the city's parking, trash, noise and public-safety rules. Every rental has to post its maximum occupancy, parking rules and quiet hours inside. A license becomes eligible for revocation after three violations in 12 months, violations can be issued to the guests themselves, and fines run up to $500 per offense. Neighbors report through a city hotline. A loud reception doesn't just end with a knock on the door; it can cost the house its license.
Booking platforms say the same. Airbnb's community disturbance policy bans open-invite gatherings and disruptive gatherings "regardless of size", including excessive noise and trash, and prohibits advertising a listing as party-friendly.
Can you get married on the beach in Galveston without a permit?
Yes, if the group is small. The Galveston Park Board's beach event FAQ says you can hold a ceremony anywhere on the public beaches as long as there are fewer than 25 people. A few conditions come with that freedom:
- You can't rope off the sand. The public keeps access to the beach around you.
- No glass. The Park Board's wording: no glass on any Texas beach. Plan cans or plastic for the toast.
- Alcohol depends on the beach. Not permitted at Stewart Beach; allowed at East Beach and Seawolf Park.
- Music: a personal speaker is fine. Anything bigger needs a loudspeaker permit from the City of Galveston.
Our Grand Beach homes sit on the East End near Stewart Beach, with community beach bridges across the dunes. A small sunrise ceremony with the people staying in the house is the version of a beach wedding we see most often, and it fits every rule above.
Where can you hold a bigger wedding or reception on the beach?
At a venue built for it. The Park Board rents beachfront wedding and event space at East Beach, Stewart Beach and Seawall Urban Park, and its special event manager handles inquiries through that page. Per the FAQ, payment is due when you sign the rental agreement and no later than 60 days before the event, all payments are final with no refunds or rain checks, the area has to be a private non-commercial event, and set-up and tear-down time is included in the rental. Check the current packet for your date, rules and fees change.
The no-refund rule matters on a hurricane coast. If you are choosing a date, our hurricane season guide covers which months carry the most risk, and Galveston in the fall covers the quieter, cooler weeks most couples end up picking.
Do you need a Texas marriage license before a Galveston beach wedding?
Yes, and the timing catches out-of-state couples. Under Texas Family Code Section 2.204 the ceremony can't take place in the 72 hours after the license is issued, with exceptions for active-duty military, a court waiver, or a completed premarital education course. Under Section 2.201 the license expires if the ceremony doesn't happen before the 90th day. If you fly in on Thursday for a Saturday wedding and pick up the license on arrival, you are inside the 72-hour window. Get it earlier or take the course.
What can you do at the house for a bachelorette, shower or milestone birthday?
Quite a lot, as long as the guest list is the people staying. What groups tell us works:
- Getting ready together. Several bathrooms and good light matter more on a wedding morning than anything else. Our big homes have between three and six and a half bathrooms.
- A private chef or catered dinner for the house. A meal for the people on the reservation is a dinner, not an event.
- Photos. Decks facing the Gulf and the beach bridge make the classic shots without hiring a venue.
- One night out. The Strand and Postoffice Street are a short drive from Grand Beach. Our restaurant guide lists the places that take big tables.
For bachelorette weekends, check the minimum age first. At Alma de Mar and Sandy Sea-cret the primary guest has to be at least 30; our other homes set their own minimum, shown on the listing. Ask us before you book rather than after.
We would rather say no to a reception in the first message than have a family's big weekend end with a noise complaint. Tell us what the celebration looks like, and we'll tell you honestly whether a house fits. - Anna & Tetiana

When is a vacation rental the wrong choice for your celebration?
- You want the ceremony or reception at the house. None of our homes host events. Book a venue, and use the house for sleeping and getting ready.
- More than about 25 people on the beach. That is past the Park Board's no-reservation limit. Reserve East Beach or Stewart Beach instead.
- You need a DJ, a band or amplified toasts. The beach needs a loudspeaker permit, and the house is a quiet residential neighborhood with posted quiet hours.
- You need full refunds if a storm hits. Park Board beach venues are non-refundable. A hotel ballroom may suit a peak-hurricane-season date better.
- The group is mostly under the minimum age. The primary guest has to meet each home's minimum age, 30 at Alma de Mar and Sandy Sea-cret.
Frequently asked questions
Can you have a wedding at a Galveston vacation rental?+
Not at ours. Every one of our large Grand Beach homes has a no-events, no-parties house rule. The city can revoke a short-term rental license after three violations in 12 months, so most hosts on the island are strict about it. Use the house for the wedding party to stay and get ready, and hold the ceremony on the public beach or at a venue.
Do you need a permit to get married on the beach in Galveston?+
Not for a small ceremony. The Galveston Park Board allows ceremonies anywhere on the public beaches with fewer than 25 people, as long as you don't block public access. You need a City of Galveston loudspeaker permit for anything louder than a personal speaker, and a Park Board reservation for a designated area at East Beach, Stewart Beach or Seawall Urban Park.
Is alcohol allowed at a Galveston beach wedding?+
It depends on the beach. The Park Board does not permit alcohol at Stewart Beach; it is allowed at East Beach and Seawolf Park. Glass is not allowed on any Texas beach, so plan cans or plastic.
How far ahead do you need a Texas marriage license?+
At least 72 hours before the ceremony, unless you are active-duty military, get a court waiver or complete the state premarital education course (Texas Family Code 2.204). The license expires if the ceremony doesn't happen before the 90th day after it is issued (Section 2.201).
Can we have a bachelorette party at a Galveston beach house?+
A bachelorette weekend for the people on the reservation, yes: dinners, decks, beach days. A party with outside guests, no. Check the minimum age for the primary guest first; at Alma de Mar and Sandy Sea-cret it is 30.
Which Galveston beach house sleeps the most people?+
In our collection, Sunrise on the Beach sleeps 17, and Grand Beach Retreat and Sandy Sea-cret sleep 16 each. All three are on the East End in the gated Grand Beach area near Stewart Beach.
Are Park Board beach wedding venues refundable?+
No. The Park Board's FAQ says all payments are final, with no refunds or rain checks, and payment is due no later than 60 days before the event. Factor that in if your date falls in hurricane season.
