We're Anna and Tetiana, a mother and daughter, and the single most common message we get the night before somebody books is some version of "sorry, one quick thing - do we need to bring towels?" So here is the honest inventory of what's included in a Galveston beach house rental: what is in every home, what changes from house to house, what costs extra, and the short list of things you genuinely have to throw in the car.
One warning before the lists. Amenity checklists on the big booking sites are not complete. They show a truncated set, and plenty of things that are sitting in the house - the beach wagon, the extra pack of coffee filters, the outdoor shower - never make it onto the grid. If something matters to your trip, message the host and ask. We answer that question five times a week and we have never once minded.
What's included in a Galveston beach house rental?
Think of it in three buckets: what is in essentially every island rental, what depends on the specific home, and what you bring yourself. The table below is how we'd sort it for our own fourteen homes.

Do Galveston vacation rentals provide towels and linens?
Yes. This is the first thing European visitors ask us, because in a lot of holiday markets abroad you rent linens as an add-on. Not here. In Galveston the standard is that you arrive to made-up beds and towels in the bathrooms, and every home we manage works that way. Two examples you can check yourself: the Sandy Sea-cret listing states plainly that linens and towels are provided, and Seascape Condo 2208 lists linens, towels and a combo washer/dryer in the bathroom.
The variable is beach towels. A wet, sandy towel is a different item from the one you use after a shower, and not every home stocks both. Some do - the top-floor condo at Pointe West includes beach towels along with a cart, chairs, boogie boards and kids' toys. If nobody says it out loud on the listing, assume the bath towels are for the bathroom and pack two beach towels per person. Guests who bring their own also don't have to negotiate over who gets the dry one at 4 p.m.
The rule we use ourselves: bath towels stay inside, beach towels go outside. If the listing doesn't mention beach towels, throw yours in the car - it's the one thing people regret skipping.
Is the kitchen actually stocked, or just technically a kitchen?
In a beach house built for 12 to 17 people, the kitchen is the whole point - nobody feeds that many at a restaurant three times a day. Ours are set up to cook real meals: full-size appliances, pots and pans, baking sheets, a blender, enough plates and glasses for a full house. Sandy Sea-cret's listing runs to two refrigerators, double ovens, a five-burner stove, a Keurig, a griddle and a slow cooker. Tiki Retreat is described the same way - every essential stocked, from baking sheets to a blender.
What a stocked kitchen does not mean is a stocked pantry. Here's what reliably runs out or was never there:
- Spices and oil. Assume salt and pepper, assume nothing else. If you're making anything with a recipe, bring the spices.
- Foil, parchment, zip bags, food containers. Rarely provided in quantity, and always needed when there's leftover brisket.
- Dishwasher pods and laundry detergent past the first load. We leave a starter amount. A week of beach laundry eats far more than that.
- Your coffee. The machine is there. The coffee that makes you human is not.
- A sharp knife you trust. Cooks who care bring one. We understand completely.
Groceries are easy to solve on arrival - the island has full-size supermarkets, and most guests do one big shop on the way in from the causeway before they ever unpack.
What beach gear comes with the house?
This is the most home-by-home item on the whole list, so we've put what our own listings actually state, rather than a general promise. Anything not in this table, ask us about before you buy chairs at the store on 61st.

If you end up at a public beach park instead of the neighborhood access, budget for that separately. Stewart Beach charges $15.00 per vehicle for admission and sells an annual Seasonal Beach Parking Pass for $50 covering both Stewart and East Beach; the park runs 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., chair and umbrella rentals are on site through John's Beach Service, and beach wheelchairs are free with a valid driver's license. Check current rates on your dates - the Park Board updates them.

This is where guests get surprised, so we'd rather over-explain it. The pattern on Galveston's West End especially: the house is yours, but the resort or neighborhood amenities around it belong to an association that charges separately.
Extras that are genuinely not in your nightly rate. Confirm current pricing with the operator on your dates.

Are cribs and high chairs provided?
Sometimes, and it is exactly the kind of thing that gets left off an amenity grid. Don't assume either way - ask us about the specific home before you book, and if we don't have one we will tell you straight rather than let you arrive with a nine-month-old and nowhere to put her. Rental agencies on the island deliver cribs, high chairs and stair gates, and the island has full-size supermarkets for diapers and formula.
What the bigger homes do have is dedicated kid space. Grand Beach Retreat has a themed bunk room with six beds, the Pointe West condo has a bunk room with four twins, and Dorado Grande has a bunk room with its own bathroom. That solves the older-kid problem - the under-twos still need a plan.
What do the fees and taxes on the total actually cover?
A Galveston quote has three moving parts beyond the nightly rate, and they behave differently:
- Cleaning fee. One charge per stay, not per night, so it hurts a two-night booking far more than a week. It goes to the people who turn the house over.
- Lodging tax - 15%. Six percent to the state (Texas Comptroller), nine percent to the city (collection form). Nobody on the island can waive it, and it applies whether you book here or on a booking site. One exception: a stay of 30 or more consecutive days makes you a permanent resident for tax purposes and the tax stops applying - tell the host in writing in advance if that's your plan.
- The booking site's guest service fee. This is the one piece that is genuinely optional. It's charged by the platform, it's a percentage of your total, and booking direct with the owner removes it - which is why the same home on the same dates can run up to 15% less here. One more number worth knowing as a guest: every legal short-term rental in the city carries a GVR registration number, and the city requires it to appear in the listing. Ours are printed at the bottom of every property page. If a listing anywhere on the island doesn't show one, that tells you something.
What should I pack for a Galveston beach house?
Assuming the house covers the standard list above, this is what's left:
- Beach towels - two per person, unless the listing says they're provided.
- Sunscreen and after-sun. The Gulf sun at this latitude is not subtle, and the island price for a bottle of SPF 50 is a lesson in supply and demand.
- A cooler, if you plan on beach days. Wagons and chairs many homes have; a cooler almost never.
- Spices, oil, foil and zip bags - the four gaps in every stocked kitchen.
- Water shoes for anyone who dislikes surprises underfoot, and a mesh bag for wet swimsuits.
- Bug spray for the evenings, especially near the bay and the wetlands on the West End.
- Beach-grade bag for phones and keys - sand gets everywhere, and it is the one thing we cannot pre-stock for you.
When a beach house is not the right choice for you
We'd rather you read this now than write it in a review:
- One night, two people. The cleaning fee lands once no matter how short the stay, so a single night in a big house is poor value. A hotel usually wins. From about three nights the maths flips, and for a group it flips immediately.
- You want daily housekeeping. There isn't any. Towels are not swapped mid-stay, beds are not remade, and the trash goes out on the neighborhood's schedule, not yours.
- You want a front desk at 2 a.m. You get us - two people with phones. We answer fast and we're local, which is better than a call center most of the time, but it is not a night manager downstairs.
- You need step-free access and the home has none. Most Galveston beach houses are built up on pilings, which means stairs. Four of ours have guest elevators; the rest genuinely do not suit anyone who can't manage a flight of steps.
- You're planning a party. Our homes are in real residential neighborhoods with permanent neighbors and HOA rules, and events are not allowed at most of them. Ask us first - some celebrations work, many don't.

Do Galveston vacation rentals provide towels and sheets?+
Yes. Galveston beach houses come with beds made up and bath towels in the bathrooms - it is the standard here, and it is true of every home we manage. Beach towels are the exception: some homes include them, many don't, so pack two per person unless the listing says otherwise.
Do I need to bring my own beach chairs to Galveston?+
It depends on the house. Several of our homes include chairs, umbrellas, wagons and sand toys - Sandy Sea-cret, both Seascape condos and the Pointe West condo do, and Fishwife provides beach wagons. Others don't. Ask before you book. If you end up at a public beach park, Stewart Beach rents chairs and umbrellas on site.
Is the pool included when I rent a condo at Pointe West?+
No. The condo is yours, but the Pointe West Resort pools, hot tub, fitness center, game room and private beach access need a wristband bought separately from the Beach Club - $25 per person for everyone aged 4 and up, once for your whole stay. The public beach itself needs no wristband. The front desk emails an invoice about 30 days before check-in.
What extra fees should I expect on a Galveston beach house booking?+
A one-time cleaning fee, 15% lodging tax (6% state plus 9% city), a pet fee if you're bringing a dog, and - only if you book through a platform rather than direct - that platform's guest service fee. Resort or community amenity passes, where they apply, are separate again.
Is there a crib or high chair in the house?+
It varies by home and is often missing from online amenity lists, so ask us about the specific house before booking rather than assuming. Baby-gear rental companies on the island deliver cribs, high chairs and stair gates to the door if the home doesn't have them.
Is the kitchen stocked with food?+
The kitchen is stocked with equipment - appliances, cookware, dishes, coffee maker - not groceries. You'll find starter amounts of dish soap, trash bags, toilet paper and hand soap. Bring food, your own coffee, spices, cooking oil, foil and zip bags, plus detergent if you're staying a full week.
Is parking included with a Galveston beach house?+
Yes - our homes have parking on site at no extra charge, and the larger ones hold several vehicles; Grand Beach Retreat parks up to six. That is separate from public beach park entry, which is $15.00 per vehicle at Stewart Beach or $50 for the Park Board's annual pass covering Stewart and East Beach.
