Galveston with a dog is easy as long as you know three rules the island actually enforces, and they are not the ones most travel sites repeat. We're Anna and Tetiana, a mother and daughter who host fourteen homes here, six of them dog-friendly. Our earlier guide covers the houses themselves. This one covers the rest of the trip: where your dog can go, where it can run loose, where it has to stay in the car, and who to call if it eats something it shouldn't.
Every rule below was checked in September 2026 against the text that sets it: the City of Galveston code and ordinances, Texas Parks and Wildlife, TxDOT and the Galveston Park Board. Where a rule comes from a listing or a business rather than a law, we say so.
Are dogs allowed on Galveston beaches?
Yes, on all of the public beaches, all year, with a leash. The rule is written into the city's beach code, Section 8-8.1: no animal may run at large on a public beach unless it is held by a cord, chain or leash not more than six feet long and strong enough to hold it. That section sits on top of the city-wide ban on animals running at large in Chapter 7, so the leash rule does not switch off when you step off the sand.
The Galveston Park Board, which runs Stewart Beach and East Beach, puts it more simply in its park rules: pets on leashes are permitted, clean up after them. The same list bans glass, asks you to stay off the dunes and not to disturb birds or turtle nests. The dunes rule matters with a dog more than with a toddler: a dog will happily dig into them.
- No dog-only fee. At the Park Board beaches you pay the normal vehicle entry, not a pet charge. The rest of the Seawall and the West End pocket parks have free parking along much of their length.
- Retractable leashes. The code limits the leash to six feet. A 16-foot retractable let all the way out does not meet it.
- Waste bags. Bring your own. Not every access point has a dispenser, and an unmarked beach is still covered by the cleanup rule.
Where can my dog go off leash in Galveston?
One place: the fenced Lindale Dog Park inside Lindale Park on the East End, set up by City Ordinance 11-031 at 600 Holiday Drive (4th Street and Marine Drive). It is free. The city's Lindale Park page lists the park at 400 Marine and open sunrise to sunset; the ordinance allows the dog park 6 AM to 10 PM. Go by daylight and you are inside both. From the Grand Beach homes it is about a mile in a straight line.
The ordinance has twenty rules. These are the ones visitors trip over:
- Leash on while entering and leaving; off only inside the fence.
- No more than two dogs per handler at a time, and you carry one leash for each.
- No puppies under 4 months and no dogs in heat.
- Current vaccinations, with a rabies tag on the collar. The ordinance also asks for a current city license tag, which out-of-town dogs will not have - bring your rabies certificate in case anyone asks.
- No food of any kind, dog or human, no glass, no strollers or bikes, no smoking or alcohol.
- Children 13 and under stay with an adult.
- Fill any holes your dog digs. Violations carry a fine of up to $500.
Nowhere on the beach is off-leash, including the quiet stretch in front of Grand Beach at seven in the morning when there is nobody around. We get asked this every summer, and the answer is the same six-foot rule.
Can I bring my dog to Galveston Island State Park?
Yes. Galveston Island State Park follows the statewide Texas State Parks rules: leash no longer than 6 feet at all times and no pets in any park building. The state parks FAQ adds the rules that catch people out: you cannot leave your dog unattended anywhere in the park, including in the car or at a campsite; pets are not allowed in the water or on the land around a designated swim area; and you need proof of a current rabies vaccination with you. Entry is $5 per adult and free for children 12 and under; there is no separate charge for the dog.
The park is on the West End, much closer to Tiki Retreat in Sea Isle than to our East End houses. It is the best place on the island for a long leashed walk on both the Gulf and the bay side in one morning.

Can my dog ride the Bolivar ferry?
Yes, but not on deck. TxDOT's ferry rules for the Galveston-Port Bolivar crossing say pets and animals, other than service animals under the ADA, must stay inside the owner's vehicle. The walk-on-with-a-short-leash allowance you may read about online applies to the Port Aransas ferry, not this one. In summer that means the car idles with the air conditioning on for the crossing and the wait, so plan the Bolivar day for a cooler morning if your dog is coming.
Which Galveston restaurants have dog-friendly patios?
Visit Galveston, the island's official visitor bureau, keeps a dog-friendly list. From it: Yaga's Cafe on the Strand with its pup-welcoming patio, Brewchachos Tacos & Cantina, Galveston Island Brewing on the West End, Texas Tail Distillery, Katie's Seafood House, Waterman's, and Reel Nauti Marina Bar & Grill, which has a dedicated dog menu. The same guide lists Baywatch Dolphin Tours, where dogs ride free on the bay tour, and a self-serve dog wash, Salty Dog Wash.
At restaurants, "dog-friendly" means the patio, not the dining room. Patios close in storms and fill up on weekends. Call ahead - a list is a starting point, and the host stand has the final say.
Where is the nearest emergency vet to Galveston?
Save these two numbers before you arrive, not after.
- Daytime, on the island: Galveston Veterinary Clinic, 2108 61st Street, (409) 744-5355. Monday-Friday 8 AM-6 PM, Saturday 8 AM-1 PM, closed Sunday.
- Nights and weekends: VCA Animal Emergency Hospital Southeast Calder Road, 1108 Gulf Freeway South, Suite 280, League City, 281-332-1678. Its own page lists it open around the clock from Thursday 6 PM to Tuesday 8 AM, and 6 PM-8 AM on Tuesday and Wednesday. Galveston Veterinary Clinic's own after-hours page points to the Calder Road emergency clinic. It is on the mainland, so allow for the drive off the island.
- Lost dog: the Galveston Island Humane Society's Animal Services Unit handles strays on the island, dispatch (409) 765-3702, 8 AM-5 PM daily. Call us too.
When is it too hot to bring a dog to Galveston?
Midday in July and August. The Gulf itself averages 87-88°F in those months (NOAA data in our water guide), so the water doesn't cool a hot dog much, and dry sand at noon burns paws. Put your palm flat on the sand for a few seconds: if you can't keep it there, neither can your dog. Beach time early and late, fresh water always, and the air-conditioned house in between. When are we not the right fit for your dog?
- You want a condo. None of our condos take dogs - not the two Seascape condos, not the Top-Floor Condo at Pointe West. Eight of our fourteen homes, houses included, have no pets at all.
- You have a big dog and want a fenced yard. Alma de Mar has the fence but takes small dogs; the homes that take large dogs don't advertise a fenced yard. Pick which matters more.
- You have a large dog and want the canal. Tiki Retreat's limit is one dog up to 30 lb, and we won't bend it.
- You want a hotel instead. Visit Galveston's dog guide lists pet policies for several hotels, among them Hotel Lucine, Moody Gardens Hotel, The Tremont House and Red Roof Inn Plus, each with its own weight limit and fee.
- Your dog needs to run loose on the beach. Nowhere in Galveston allows it. A Texas beach with different rules is a different trip.

Are dogs allowed on Galveston beaches?+

Is there an off-leash dog beach in Galveston?+

Among Karas Vacation Rentals homes, The Grand View in Grand Beach welcomes dogs with no weight or size limit, and Oasis by the Bay takes 2-3 dogs with no size restriction. Alma de Mar and Happy House take small dogs, Sunrise on the Beach takes two dogs, and Tiki Retreat takes one dog up to 30 lb with a $150 pet fee. None of the condos allow dogs.
