Of all the questions guests ask us before a trip, this is the one that actually shapes the whole vacation: where on the island should we stay? Galveston is a long, skinny island, and the difference between one end and the other is real - a beachfront house near the attractions feels like a completely different trip than a remote cottage 20 miles down the road. Pick the area that fits how you want to spend your days, and everything else gets easier.
The East End and Grand Beach: beachfront, close to everything (where we are)
This is our home base, so we'll be honest about why. The East End is the wide eastern tip of the island, and Grand Beach is the gated, first-row beachfront community where most of our homes sit. You get direct, walk-out access to the sand - and you're still only a short drive from The Strand, the Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens, and the family fun of Stewart Beach and East Beach. It's the rare combination of quiet-behind-the-gates and close-to-it-all.
It's also where our biggest homes live, which makes it ideal for families and groups: Grand Beach Retreat and Sandy Sea-cret are first-row beachfront, and Sunrise on the Beach, Alma de Mar, and Dorado Grande put the whole crew on the Gulf with room to spread out. Best for: families, multi-family trips, and anyone who wants the beach and the attractions without choosing between them.
Our home: Grand Beach RetreatThe Seawall: central, walkable, and lively
The Seawall is the 10-mile boulevard along the Gulf, lined with hotels, condos, restaurants, and the Pleasure Pier. Stay here and you can walk to dinner, walk to the pier, and be on the sand in minutes - no car required for the basics. It's the busiest, most energetic stretch of the island, which is the appeal for some and the drawback for others. Our Seascape condos sit right in this zone, sized for couples and small trips. Best for: first-timers, couples, car-free stays, and anyone who wants the action at their doorstep.
The Historic Strand and downtown: for history and walkability
If the beach is secondary and the island's history is the draw, base yourself near The Strand. Downtown puts you steps from Victorian architecture, galleries, candy shops, and some of the best restaurants on the island, with the harbor and museums close by. The beach is a short drive rather than out the door. This is also the heart of the big festivals - Mardi Gras and Dickens on The Strand. Best for: couples, history lovers, and festival-goers.
Our home: Top-Floor Condo at Pointe WestThe West End: quiet, spacious, and remote
Head past the Seawall and the island turns residential and calm: wider, emptier beaches, big skies, and far fewer people. The trade-off is distance - you'll drive longer for groceries, restaurants, and the main attractions, and there are fewer public amenities. We keep one home out this way, a condo at the Pointe West resort on the far western tip, with resort pools and big water views. Best for: longer stays, remote work, and anyone whose idea of a vacation is no crowds at all.
Our home: Tiki RetreatThe bay and the canals: for boaters and anglers
Galveston isn't only the Gulf side. On the bay and the canals you can tie a boat up behind the house and fish the flats at dawn. Our Tiki Retreat is canal-front with a boat ramp nearby - a different kind of Galveston trip built around the water rather than the surf. Best for: fishing trips, boaters, and groups who'd rather be on the bay than the beach.

For a quick one-night stop near the cruise port, a Seawall hotel is fine. Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Galveston?+
For most visitors, the gated East End at Grand Beach is the sweet spot - first-row beachfront homes with direct sand access, yet still a short drive from The Strand, the Pleasure Pier, and Moody Gardens. The Seawall is best for walkable, car-free stays near restaurants and nightlife, downtown near The Strand is best for history lovers, and the West End is best for quiet and space.
Where should families stay in Galveston?+
Families do best in a beachfront house on the East End (Grand Beach), where the kids can walk straight to the sand and you're close to Stewart Beach, the Pleasure Pier, and Moody Gardens. A house with a full kitchen and separate bedrooms is far easier with children than a hotel room.
Is it better to stay on the Seawall or the West End of Galveston?+
Stay on the Seawall if you want to walk to restaurants, the Pleasure Pier, and the beach without a car - it's central and lively but busier. Choose the West End if you want wide, quiet beaches and space, and don't mind driving farther for food and attractions.
Where do the Galveston cruise passengers stay before a cruise?+
Cruise travelers often stay near the Seawall or downtown for an easy morning trip to the port. If you're arriving a day or two early, a beach house lets the whole group settle in comfortably before sailing - just plan the drive to the terminal on departure morning.
